Avova: Organic Raingrown Avocados from the heart of Mexico

During his visit to Michoacán – the heart of Mexican avocado cultivation – Gert-Jan Lieffering, Eosta's Sustainable Sourcing Manager, once again saw why this region is so special. The province alone has more than 55,000 hectares of avocados, mostly small family farms. Michoacán’s unique location, with altitudes up to 2,900 metres and a cooler climate, allows for a long harvest season. Growers can leave fruit on the tree longer and harvest at different times, giving them great flexibility throughout the season.

Eosta has been working with Avova, Eder Salvador Vajjelo's family business, for seven years. He grows organic avocados on approximately 20 hectares, using only rainwater. Old trees, some over 50 years old, yield fruit with a rich taste and high oil content.

Sustainable and responsible

Avova consciously chooses organic and environmentally friendly methods: compost and leaf fertilisers, preservation of leaf litter and ground cover, and planting trees and legumes to prevent erosion and enhance biodiversity. The orchards are home to eagles, foxes, armadillos and deer – a sign of a healthy ecosystem.

People and community

In addition to caring for nature, Avova invests in people. Employees work in safe and hygienic conditions, receive fair wages, statutory benefits and training, and are given the opportunity to provide feedback. The company buys locally, thereby contributing to the regional economy.
